System overview
The Semantic Copyright system consists of 3 sub-systems:
- Identification of the files. Any system can interrogate, via the Internet, either of the nodes attached to Semantic Copyright regarding the copyright information of any work, without using tags or meta-data, but using the identity of the file (hashing or identification patterns).
- The question is sent to a node of Semantic Copyright.
- Semantic Copyright returns two responses of a semantic character (understandable by the systems):
- A basic ontology with the most relevant information, which can be used by the system to take the first decisions: author's name and basic features, including the granted rights and the limitations on the use and dissemination of the work.
- A website with detailed semantic information about the specific ontology for each type of work (literary, art, music, video, etc.).
Why
Nowadays, digital networks and the distribution applications that operate on them work with information or data that, from a legal point of view, can be works protected under intellectual property law. We refer to texts which appear on websites or blogs, books, articles, conferences or reports, images (drawings, photographs, graphics, certain designs), musical or audiovisual content, or computer programs, to name a few examples.
Internet users do not always have all the above information in order to know which uses can be made of the works circulating on the Internet; this fact creates uncertainty, facilitates that unlawful acts can be committed and limits the dissemination, processing and reuse of these contents when possible.
As a solution to prevent this, the computer systems that facilitate the distribution of or access to digital content should be able to determine whether the information operated holds any intellectual property rights, and if so, which uses are permitted or prohibited. Research in the semantic field is aimed at "understanding" data by hardware and software applications, using a philosophy of free application for possible standardization and future interoperability.
Technology
The capabilities of the HTML language, focused mainly on the display of Internet content, are limited in terms of categorizing the elements that circulate through the network and therefore the understanding of the data by hardware and computer applications.
Currently there are some semantic technology initiatives applied to intellectual property which, through the inclusion of information by means of the support structure of the Semantic Web RDF, in conjunction with the SPARQL query language and the definition of OWL concepts, make it possible to define and control the flow of content with full respect for the intellectual property rights of their respective holders.
The purpose of Semantic Copyright is to take the first steps towards achieving those goals, establishing a common information structure that allows that level of understanding of the intellectual property rights of the contents circulating on the Net.
Who are Semantic Copyright?
The Semantic Copyright platform is formed by public institutions, companies and individuals for the purpose of promoting the protection and dissemination of safe contents on the Internet, legally and with guarantees for both creators and rightsholders and users of intellectual property works circulating on the Internet. If you want to be part of it, please contact us at [email protected].
